It is disheartening to hear the sad rumour about this God-given fruit, things like “please stop taking pear (Ube)” or “I don’t take Pear as it causes Malaria”. Pear fruit is a kind of Pear native to Africa and particularly grows in Nigeria with its Igbo name as “Ube”.

The fruit belongs to a tree whose scientific name is Dascroides Edulis. Most people like planting it as ornamentals within the compound or in plantations or widely in the forest reaching heights of between 12 and 40m. In addition, the fruit has many health benefits as well as its nutrients.
